Tinder fungus owes its name to its early use as a firelighter. It was also used to make clothing and hats.
It grows on deciduous trees and is widespread throughout the world. It is particularly common on poplars, birches, oaks, and beeches.
The fruiting bodies of the tinder fungus are usually black and silvery on the underside . This fungus prefers older trees and can live up to 30 years , reaching a diameter of 10–60 cm .
Even the Native Americans used tinder fungus as a medicinal remedy, and Ötzi also carried it with him for emergencies .
